Board Quality Care Committee
The Board Quality Care Committee ensures that quality improvement is an integral component of The Simkin Centre’s governance and management process. The Committee monitors and reports to the Simkin Centre Board of Directors on measurable quality indicators making use of appropriate data that includes critical incident reports, occurrence reports, complaints, quality indicators and any systemic or recurring quality issues raised by the Leadership Team and Medical Advisory Committee.
Resident Care
We remain committed to our journey towards excellence in the care of the elderly. The focus of our Resident Care Teams and Initiatives is to have a positive impact on the care and services we provide to both our Residents and their families.
Research Participation
We are proud to be a part of many research projects. Below are just a few projects we are participating in.
- BABEL – Better Targeting, Better Outcomes for Frail Elderly Patients: This 2 year initiative is funded by the Canadian Frailty Network and Research Manitoba. The goal is to standardize the approach to advanced care planning in nursing homes. The Simkin Centre is an intervention site and will follow the BABEL approach for those residents who meet the criteria. Completion is anticipated in 2020. (Note: This study is on hold due to COVID-19)
- Functional Movement System – A Proactive Approach to Identify Movement Dysfunction: The objective is to reduce the frequency and severity of musculoskeletal injury in staff by identifying functional movement deficits that may be predictive of general musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. The ultimate goal is to modify these movement deficits through individual corrective exercise prescriptions to restore movement pattern. (Note: This study is on hold due to COVID-19)
2020 Clinical and Food Services Initiatives:
Many of our initiatives have required the Clinical Dietitian and the Dietitian Manager to work together to improve the health and well-being of our residents. In an effort to meet both the WRHA Diet Compendium Guidelines and improve quality and palatability, the following projects have recently been implemented or are currently underway in our department.
- Liquidised Breakfast Smoothie – For those Residents receiving most texture modified restricted diets. Provided on units at breakfast, made by kitchen production.
- Late Breakfast Review – For those Residents who like to sleep in but still want a palatable breakfast option that can be provided given constraints of unit workload. Provided on units at breakfast at a time to be determined, provided by kitchen and distributed by nursing staff. This has not yet been implemented and is in discussion planning phase.
- Resident Supplementation (Fortified Pudding) – For Residents requiring extra protein and calories as identified by the Clinical Dietitian and unable to meet nutrition needs due to hypermetabolic need or dysphagia (swallowing difficulties). Made in production but given at mealtimes by Dietary Aides.
- Tray Tickets – For all Residents to ensure accurate diet information, including allergies, preferences, and other individualized meal times (e.g. adaptive utensils) are provided at point of service. Produced during production and at point of service.
- Allergen Review – For any Resident coming into the facility with food allergies and intolerances. Occurs during production and at point of service.
Manitoba Health Standards:
Personal Care Homes in Manitoba undergo a bi-annual Health Standards Review. We are happy to share with you the results of our most recent results.
At the February 2020 review there was one unmet Standard related to water temperatures identified. A plumber has identified the need for a hot water tank circulator pump. The pump was installed on the week of June 10, 2020.
